Power Plant Emissions Get Cleaner

Ohio Valley residents can breathe easier, according to American Electric Power’s Wayne Irons, since emissions controls were installed at the company’s Mitchell Power Plant a year ago.

The Mitchell plant installed its first sulfur dioxide-catching scrubber about one year ago and added a second last April, plant manager Irons said. And he is pleased with their performance.

“We are making better than designed capture,” he said. “We are at about 98 percent capture of SO2.”

Friends of Coal Push New Message, Outreach

Steve Walker, president and chief operating officer of Cecil I. Walker Machinery Co., launched a Friends of Coal membership drive at the company's Belle headquarters by telling workers that their jobs depend on convincing others that coal is an essential energy source.

Steve Walker, president of Walker Machinery, said he was preaching to the choir at the Belle headquarters Jan. 30, but drove home the message of evolving clean coal by telling his employees, "This is not your grandfather's coal industry."

Walker Machinery Hosts Friends of Coal Membership Drives

Walker Machinery Company, the Caterpillar equipment dealer servicing central/southern West Virginia and eastern Ohio, kicked off a series of Friends of Coal membership drives at its Belle headquarters today in an effort to increase enrollment in the organization and to further demonstrate Walker Machinery’s commitment to the region’s mining industry.  The company will hold membership drives at all seven of its operations over the coming weeks.

Friends of Coal Launches New Recruiting Effort

It's an election year.  The legislature is in Charleston and the debate has been hot about the future of the nation's energy needs.     The coal industry sees it as the perfect time to launch a new effort to recruit more supporters.

The Friends of Coal Organization kicked off a new campaign Wednesday at the headquarters of Walker Machinery in Belle.    Although established several years ago, Friends of Coal continues to work toward forging a more favorable attitude toward the use of coal and coal mining in general.
