Dominion's coal-fired plant is necessary and safe

As a scientist and a native of the Appalachian coal fields, I feel compelled to respond to the article "A push for greater pollution controls at proposed plant," April 5, by representatives of the National Parks Conservation Association concerning the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center being planned for Wise County, Va.

I have testified twice at hearings before the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in support of this facility. I would not be supportive of this project if I were not personally convinced that the combustion technology selected, combined with additional emission-control equipment will result in exceptionally clean environmental performance.

A coalition of anti-coal groups contends it has scored 65 victories over coal in the past three years, reported Judy Pasternak of the Los Angeles Times.

Any time a proposal is made to build a new plant, the coalition assigns a lawyer to stop the project.

Friends of Coal to conduct membership drive

The Friends of Coal is launching a two-week membership drive from March 31 to April 14 in Mabscott in an effort to get hundreds of the town’s residents to sign up, said Mel Hancock, coalfield representative.

On Thursday, Mabscott’s City Council voted to officially make the town a member in the Friends of Coal, and will sponsor the membership drive. The move has the support of Mabscott’s Mayor Wayne Houck, who was once a coal miner.

USAF official: 'Guess what? We're going to burn coal'

On this wind-swept air base near the Missouri River, the U.S. Air Force has launched an ambitious plan to wean itself from foreign oil by turning to a new and unlikely source: coal.

The Air Force wants to build at its Malmstrom base in central Montana the first piece of what it hopes will be a nationwide network of facilities that would convert domestic coal into cleaner-burning synthetic fuel.
