Marshall fans gather to paint Charleston green

Hundreds of Marshall University fans descended on the state capital Wednesday night for the annual "Paint the Capital City Green" pep rally, the largest such indoor event for Thundering Herd fans in the nation.

The event was conducted at the Embassy Suites Hotel, where fans and alumni heard from Marshall President Stephen Kopp and head football coach Mark Snyder and got to meet coaches and players.

A tailgate spread kicked things off at 6 p.m., with music from members of the Marching Thunder and an appearance from the university cheerleaders and mascot Marco. It was followed by a formal program. The event was sponsored by Friends of Coal.

Bluefield Coal Symposium Set

The Greater Bluefield Area is a beautiful, mountainous community, which crosses state lines along the border of southwestern Virginia and southern West Virginia.  Located in the mountains along the foothills of one of the most picturesque mountain valley settings to be found anywhere, the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Bluefield Coal Symposium with the theme "Coal Mine Safety:  The Road to Zero Harm".  For two days, August 26 and 27, the Bluefield Coal Symposium will address providing greater safety and increased productivity.

Tickets Going Fast for Nehlen Tribute and FOC Prep Classic

An Evening with Don Nehlen & Friends is set for Sunday, August 31, 2008 in the WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, WV from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. This event kicks off a huge Friends of Coal Prep Classic Labor Day weekend of football-related entertainment in the Upper Ohio Valley. As West Virginia’s most successful and beloved football coach, Nehlen will be honored by many whose lives have been touched over the decades by Coach Nehlen. Former players and coaches, as well as coaching peers and active coaching greats will celebrate the contribution Nehlen has made as a coach, husband, father and friend to many. The entire evening will be emceed by the renowned Roy Firestone, seven-time Emmy award winner and one of ESPN’s “original” personalities.

Coal Forum Hosts "Imagine WV Conference"

The WV Coal Forum and Marshall University will hold an energy forum from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, August 19 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston.  Everyone is encouraged to attend and there is no fee.

The purpose of this forum is to expose civic, legislative and opinion leaders in West Virginia to "Imagine West Virginia’s Coal: Energy, The Environment & West Virginia Policy Recommendations” and to facilitate discussion on coal’s role in our state and nation’s energy strategy.

The event will include three segments, which include:

  • Comment by elected officials
  • Presentation by Imagine Wet Virginia outlining their study recommendations
  • Panel discussion on the Imagine West Virginia report and coal’s position in state and national energy policy

FOC Intends to "Paint the Capitol City Green"

Tickets are still available for Marshall University’s Paint the Capitol City Green pep rally Wednesday, August 20 in Charleston.  Advance only tickets are on sale now for $35.00. To order tickets, call (304) 696-7138.  Paint the Capitol City Green is the nation’s largest indoor pep rally for Thundering Herd alumni, fans and friends. Festivities start at 6 pm at Charleston’s Embassy Suites.
